INTERACTION ON LGBTI ISSUES IN NEPAL AND SEXUAL ORIENTATION PROGRAM WITH LAKSHMI GHALAN

The program “INTERACTION ON LGBTI ISSUES IN NEPAL AND SEXUAL ORIENTATION PROGRAM WITH LAKSHMI GHALAN”, organized by Sherpa For Change with support of Y-PEEER Nepal & Y-PEER Asia Pacific Center took place on 22dec, Saturday of 2018 at Pasang Lhamu Wall Climbing Center, Dhumbarahi. The program had 40 participants out of which 60% were students and 40% were personalities from different field.
Program Coordinator of Sherpa For Change Tshering N. Sherpa expressed that this sort of program is important to bring awareness among people about LGBTI people, their issues, problems, challenges faced in the society. She believes such program helps to change people’s attitude towards LGBTI groups which contributes to make an equitable society where LGBTI people are respected and can live in dignity with sufficient social, cultural, economic, legal and political rights.
The program began with introduction of Sherpa For Change and Y- PEER followed by introduction of Lakshmi Ghalan and Mitini Nepal. LGBTI rights activist and founder of Mitini Nepal, Lakshmi Ghalan gave sexual orientation to the participants.
Many participants didn’t have clear idea about what LGBTIQ is all about. At the program, Lakshmi Ghalan gave sexual orientation to the participants with depth explanation, story sharing, similarities, differences between different genders & sexuality. Mountaineer Phursona Sherpa expressed that he has gained more knowledge about LGBTIQ through the sexual orientation session.Lakhsmi Ghalan shared her inspiring life story of knowing her sexuality, the way she faced problems in her family and society due to it. She inspired all through her story of hardship and dedication to fight for rights and dignity of LGBTI community of Nepal founding Mitini Nepal in 2002 A.D. and working with the aim of protecting and promoting human rights of the sexual and gender minorities people of Nepal.

The program then had interaction on LGBTI issues in Nepal. Lakhsmi Ghalan answered many queries of the participants regarding LGBTI people’s health, economy, socio-cultural life. She made everyone clear about their queries through her knowledge, personal experiences and shared many stories of LGBTI people she had known, worked with. Those aspects highlighted the then and now situation, problems, issues faced by LGBTI community of Nepal.
Sachin K. Lohani, one of the participant and a law student shared his knowledge on legal provision for LGBTI community of Nepal. He shared many decisions made by judiciary on different cases based on LGBTI issues in Nepal and expressed that though executive body of Nepal government is yet to make strong laws, provisions for LGBTI community, the judicial body of Nepal has been supportive of LGBTI people and their rights. Another participant Chhimi Namduk Sherpa shared that her collogues from Philippines during her internship in Bahrain were very supportive of LGBTI community. She wishes everyone to have such respect, support towards LGBTI community.Model and management student Arpana Dhakal thanked the organizers for organizing such an informative session. She shared that many people should be interested to be part of such programs as it helps to build a society full of respect, support for everyone.
Fura Gelzen Sherpa, national coordinator of YPEER Nepal shared the importance of promotion and protection of human rights, make LGBTI people self-reliant, provide psychosocial counseling services, legal information and information regarding on sexually transmitted diseases like HIV/AIDS in order to ensure the rights of sexual and gender minorities of Nepal.
Lakshmi Ghalan shared her gratitude to the organizers, participants, supporters of the program for organizing such crucial program. She says these type of programs helps to enhance better environment for LGBTI people and advocate for a peaceful, prosperous society where sexual and gender minorities’ community can live with self-esteem and dignity while enjoying human rights without any discrimination, violence, assault and fear.
